The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has cleared an illegal dumpsite behind 68, Oduntan Street in the Ketu area of Lagos, as part of efforts to tackle environmental hazards and enforce sanitation laws across the state.
The enforcement operation, which took place on Saturday, was carried out following directives from the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who disclosed the development via his official X handle (@tokunbo_wahab), said the unauthorised dumpsite posed serious health and environmental risks to residents of the area.
“Our LAWMA enforcement team is currently conducting clearance operations at an illegal dump site located behind 68, Oduntan Street, Ketu,” Wahab stated.
“This morning’s action targets an unauthorised waste disposal area that has been causing environmental hazards in the neighbourhood. We are clearing all accumulated waste and will deploy surveillance measures to prevent a recurrence.”
He also warned residents against illegal waste disposal, stressing that it violates environmental laws and endangers public health.
“Residents are reminded that illegal dumping violates Lagos State environmental laws and endangers public health. To report waste violations in your area, contact @Lawma_gov immediately,” the commissioner added.
LAWMA has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a cleaner, healthier Lagos and urged all residents to cooperate by disposing of waste responsibly through approved channels.
