Works Minister David Umahi has faced criticism following his comment that it is not yet the turn of the South-East to produce Nigeria’s president, saying the current political moment belongs to President Bola Tinubu.
Umahi made the remarks in Benin while discussing federal road projects and defending the Tinubu administration.
He said the South-East would eventually have an opportunity to produce the president, but urged supporters of the government to highlight its achievements.
The comment has drawn reactions from public affairs commentators and other critics, who argued that presidential succession should not be determined by informal zoning expectations.
Some also challenged Umahi’s assessment of his political standing compared with former Anambra Governor Peter Obi.
