Super Eagles B coach, Eric Chelle, will announce his final 28-man squad for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) today (Tuesday), following two weeks of intense training in Ikenne, Ogun State.

The rescheduled tournament will take place from August 2 to 30 across three East African nations , Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.

According to sources within the team’s camp, the final list will be unveiled after a concluding test match today. Chelle initially invited 35 players, but the number has reduced over time.

Five players , Papa Daniel Mustapha, Waliu Ojetoye, Savour Isaac, Abubakar Sadiq, and Philip Adejo , were ruled out after securing moves abroad, rendering them ineligible. One player, Rangers International defender Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, was dropped due to injury.

As anticipation builds, several players have acknowledged the pressure of securing a spot in the final squad.

Team captain through the qualifiers, Junior Nduka, said:

“Everybody is under pressure, but definitely the coaches want the best among the 35 players.”

Rivers United and former Flying Eagles forward, Aniekeme Okon, echoed similar sentiments.

“It puts pressure on us. Thirty-five players being invited, everybody is going to give out their best with an expectation of being selected. So we keep pushing.”

Nigeria, who finished as runners-up in the 2018 edition, have been drawn into Group D alongside defending champions Senegal, Sudan, and Congo.

The Super Eagles B will play their first two group matches , against Senegal and Sudan, at the Amman Stadium in Zanzibar, before facing Congo at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

Nigeria is still chasing a maiden CHAN title, having previously finished third in 2014 and second in 2018.
